Mathematics Site Implementation
Levels: K–12
Format: On-site daily sessions
Audience: District and school leadership, math coaches, classroom teachers, and specialists
Description
Professional development research has shown that in order for effective mathematics instruction to take place, site-based follow-up is vital. CORE includes on-site job-embedded support to ensure practitioners are implementing their math instruction well and using the knowledge gained during Math Academy sessions. The focus of site-based work includes refining lessons, improving the use of the selected math curriculum, and reviewing concepts learned in the Math Academy, as well as analyzing student data.
The specific needs of each school/district will shape the site-based work; however, the following activities are included.
Collaborative Planning: CORE consultants meet with leadership and staff to uncover needs and facilitate math plan development, including plans for implementation of Response to Instruction/Intervention.
Standards and Curriculum Implementation and Alignment: CORE consultants will facilitate review and alignment of the core curriculum for each grade and course with national, state, or local standards, including the Common Core State Standards, and will assist with robust implementation of the school’s selected math curriculum.
Data Analysis/Needs Assessment: During on-site work, CORE consultants review student formative and summative assessment data and use that data with course/grade teams and the school/district leadership to plan student interventions and identify areas of professional development need in practitioners.
Mentoring and Coaching: CORE consultants provide in-class lesson modeling, observation, co-teaching, and debriefing.
Materials Review and Selection: CORE consultants review current materials and assist in selecting additional supplemental or intervention resources.
Organization and Scheduling: CORE consultants review existing schedules and make recommendations for modifications, including added time for intervention and effective grouping strategies.
Program Practice: CORE consultants work in course- and grade-alike groups to refine lessons and practice math instructional delivery outside of the classroom.
Math Concept Review: CORE consultants facilitate reviews of content learned and follow up on practice activities.
Leadership and Coach Capacity Building: CORE consultants regularly meet with the building/district leadership and math coaches or department chairs, facilitating walk-throughs and building knowledge of what to look for in effective math instruction.
Grade/Course PLC: CORE consultants facilitate grade- and/or course-alike professional learning community (PLC) collaborations to reflect upon and refine lessons and solve student performance issues. During such collaborations, teams may review data, plan interventions, or review research and consider program applications. (This includes facilitating ongoing Lesson Study and Program Planning.)
