Differentiated Instruction Workshop: Houghton Mifflin Reading

Audience: K–6 classroom teachers, specialists, coaches, and administrators

Description

This workshop covers how differentiated instruction occurs in the Houghton Mifflin Reading program. Participants will become familiar with the three-tier model; understand the Houghton Mifflin components for differentiation, including the assessment components; learn effective ways to differentiate; and have time to begin to lay out a plan.

  • Understand what differentiation means.
  • Understand the three-tier model and its link to differentiation.
  • Know the program components for differentiated instruction and for assessment.
  • See an effective classroom in action.

Writing Instruction Workshop: Houghton Mifflin Reading

Levels: K–3, 3–6
Length: 1 day
Audience: Elementary classroom teachers, specialists, and administrators

Description

This workshop supports educators in the use of Houghton Mifflin Reading writing components.

Participant Outcomes

  • Use explicit instruction to teach writing and language.
  • Use the Daily Language Practice and the Journal Prompts effectively.
  • Use assessment information to plan differentiated instruction.
  • Use graphic organizers, evaluation tools, rubrics, benchmark papers, and checklists effectively.
  • Teach the five-phase writing process effectively.
  • Teach the Reading-Writing Workshop effectively.

Scholastic’s READ 180 Intensive Intervention

Levels: 4-8
Length: Varies, see below
Audience: All educators involved in teaching or implementing Scholastic’s READ 180 (CA 2008 Edition) or educators who may have recently upgraded to this edition
Prerequisite: Participating districts must provide the adopted materials at the time of the sessions. All participants must have the appropriate Teacher’s Editions (LBook, rBook, and System 44) for the grade levels they are preparing to teach.

Targeted Program Implementation Workshop - 3 Days, (4 Days when combined with Leadership Workshop below)

Participants will learn, practice, refine, and plan:

  • Best practices to maximize daily instruction
  • Presenting and meeting lesson objectives
  • Utilizing key routines and instructional strategies
  • Effective progress monitoring to increase targeted instruction
  • Planning and management of differentiated instruction
  • Setting and reaching accelerated intervention goals

Leadership Workshop - 1 Day

Principals, coaches, and site leadership will learn the following:

  • A comprehensive approach to intervention and placement
  • Walk-through “What to Look For”
  • Collaborative practices using assessments and data analysis
  • Strategies to increase implementation and accelerate achievement

Institutionalize Implementation (Site-Based, 8–14 Days)

To ensure full and complete implementation, CORE provides highly skilled program specialists to work directly in your schools with your principals, literacy coaches, department heads, and teachers to provide refined program practice, model lessons, and targeted coaching, all guided by facilitated data analysis.
